Good Ol' "Sick Days"

100.6! Do you know how long it's been since I had a temperature of 100.6? Try since the time I was, like, in 5th or 6th grade, and I also had a HORRIBLE sore throat to match. Well, this was my temperature just two days ago...AND I FELT AWFUL!!!

But it seems I'm not alone... I've run into countless fellow seminarians who've also been fighting a touch of "the bug" lately as well. I guess it's just that time of year.

Suffice it to say, this just got my nostalgic juices flowing: remembering all the special things my Momma used to do for me when I got sick. I remember lying - sprawled out on the couch - w/ my famous "butter blanket"; watching Nick Jr. while feasting on endless loaves of Mom's famous "wheat-bread toast, thickly smothered with grape jelly." OH! And I can't forget how Mom would buy me an entire jar of Vitamin C from the store, hand it to me right out of the grocery bag, and instruct me to "scarf the stuff like it were candy." She was the GREATEST - always full of "cootchie-cooes," hugs, and kisses - always making any illness worth it.

(Deep Sigh) Does anyone else want their Mommy yet? :)

So, what are your favorite "sick memories?" What did your parents do special for you? What do you do (or will you do) for your kids? What do you do for yourself?

When I got sick I would watch "Saved by the Bell". Now I hear the theme song and I wretch.

It's good to know that you didn't drop out of the face of the earth!

In my family, it's a RULE that any sick person gets a new coloring book. Notice that I did not say "any sick child." This rule probably started when my sister and I were kids, but it's still in effect today, despite the fact that we are now 24 and nearly-23. That's what we take when we visit people in the hospital, too -- no matter how old they are!

YAY, Catherine! You found my blog... I love coloring books! I've been LONGING to color for the longest time... Maybe it's b/c I've been sick.

I'm feeling much better today... My fever broke (finally) and now I'm just trying to rest up so I don't relapse, you know?

I remember drinking a lot of 7 UP along with orange juice and water. I also remember my bed being a little bit elevated with blankets under my mattres. Even when I was sick I think I still watched tv shows that were very educational on PBS.

Ah this was nice to remember the good old sick days. Keep posting Jennifer and tell your roommates to post too! They seem to be slacking.

HEY! Some of us have been having some sick time of our own!

When we kids were sick, Mom used to make us lay in her heated waterbed. Then she would make us drink rediculous amounts of honey/lemon/ginseng tea. Then she would sit next to us, rub her hands together with a quick motion and lay them on our tummies. Oh, and we can't forget that she would boil water all night and lay the steaming pots next to our bed.

Hm... the older I get, the more I realize parents really knew what they were doing.

When my (full-grown) cousin showed up to Grandma's house for Thanksgiving a few years ago, nearly delirious with sickness but not wanting to miss Thanksgiving with the family, he was promptly taken to the guest bedroom and made to lie down in relative isolation all day.
I got a copy of my grandma's "Gone With The Wind" and read to him for about an hour, doing character voices and everything.
If you knew my cousin -- he wanted to kill me. It was in his eyes. But he was too sick to get out of bed and do anything about it, so I just sat there and read to him till my voice started to give. Talk about captive audiences. Every now and then someone else from the family would walk in, see me reading to him with my ridiculous voices, laugh, and walk out.

Oh, goodness! I loved being sick when I was little. Mom would wait on me like I was in a five star restaurant with a blank check for her tip. She would bring Sprite (because it doesn't look bad when you see it again), saltine crackers (I never really liked those though; no taste), heated Jell-o (believe it or not, it's not that bad and it coats the throat), and to top it off, I would get my Nanny's famous cough syrup! I still don't know exactly what the stuff was, but I bet you it was over 100 proof. After one swig, nothing was in your lungs but air because that stuff burns up everything all the way down! Before anyone thinks of my Mom or Nanny in a negative light, I never missed a day of school after 4th grade, so something must've worked.

Donna, your mom must have given Mr. Miyagi lessons! How COOL is that...

BTW: My parents used to give my an old German liquor, Yagermeister, when I had a fever and sore throat as a little girl.

I got a whole spoonful as a child, and then Dad would bundle me up in TWO sleepers, send me straight to bed, and I would sweat like crazy all night.

But by the time I woke up that next morning...I WAS FIT AS A FIDDLE! (So I think your Gramma must be in the know, Jason). :)

Jen, its actually Jagermeister, with two dots on top of the "a". Not that I'm acquainted with it or anything;)

Gracias, senor! :)

I knew when I spelled it the first time that I'd probably butcher it...

Hope your evenings going GREAT, and I'll see you tomorrow morning right here - at UNIQUE!

So glad you are beginning to feel better, Jen...with the way we have been downing the vitamin C I am surprised we have not turned pale orange...smile.

Oooh! Oooh! You have just got to watch this special video that I posted in honor of Donna and Jason...hehe.

I just got over a bout with the flu, and my temperature was 100.7 - HA! Beat ya by a tenth ;) That was actually lower than when I first got it though. One thing my sister always does whenever anyone in my family gets sick is goes out and spends a lot of money on over the counter remedies because then the sick person gets better the next day and no one else gets sick, as murphy's law would have it.

all I can remember is when I got really, really sick and had to take these little chewable purple pills that made you really thirsty - but I couldn't drink any thing for TWO HOURS or else I would throw up. and another time I was sitting on my cousin's lap (she was visiting) and all of the sudden I vomited all over her jeans. and then Ryan had to clean it up with a toothbrush. Mwahahaha!

Potato soup and sweet tea. It's the cure - and my mom's a nurse, so she oughta know. Even now when I get sick, I call my mom and whine. I mean, she shouldn't miss out on it, right?

See you in class tomorrow!

You just had me rolling, VA! Ryan with a toothbrush...Wow, your imagination really is running away with you!

Speaking of being sick, how have you been feeling?

Jen, the era of sickness is over!

The time has come for a new post. Say it with me now...I am not sick, I will not be sick, I don not want to be sick, Donna does not want to be sick, Lisa does not want to be sick, all sicknesses must be checked at the door of our apartment upon entering!
